Glacial in origin, Iskanderkul Lake offers panoramic vistas from an altitude of 2,195 m (7,201 ft). The turquoise waters contrast wonderfully against its alpine surroundings and provide the perfect photo opportunity. Due to the water's high mineral content, the lake has barely any aquatic life, but the surrounding forest, a designated nature reserve, is home to an abundance of plant and animal life. Iskanderkul Lake Reviews
Had a lovely day trip to this beautiful and gorgeous place. Would love to see it again. With love from Pakistan. more »
A place where everyone should visit before leaving this mortal world as Alexander the Great did. As well as it was the most beautiful lake in Soviet Union. You will not regret to visit it believe me..... more »
beautiful place but getting there is an uncomfortable journey. the infrastructure is undeveloped and the roads are quite bad. there are many big trucks plying the roads and the journey needs to go thro the Anzob tunnel. Anzob tunnel is a 5km of total darkness, wet mountain roads, unruly speeding and overtaking vehicles. it was quite nightmarish. i made the journey end Oct and the lake facilities were closed! 3-4 hours drive for nothing. nevertheless, the scenery is quite spectacular, the same desert, arid mountain as that in Salta , Argentina. except in a much larger scale. try it only if very adventurous as booking the ride is difficult and expensive. my driver with car, booked with Jahovir travel, cost US100 and the driver did not know much english. in the end i had to pee on a tree as he did not stop me for toilet break
Beautiful place. The lake is so impossibly turquoise! Without a driver, coming from Uzbekistan (Penjikent border), it can be a bit of a pain getting here. Once you're here, though, it is pretty magical. Bring cash; there are no ATMs. Prepare to pay an entry fee once you get to the lake per person, per day. There is a barrier and some people from the national park admin who will give you a ticket. I think it is about 20s pp/day. (Count your change also!) You probably also want to stay at the Turbaza, which has many rooms, a good restaurant, and the best lake view. It is to the around the lake to the right as you get there from the dirt road. There is also a little supermarket next to the barrier, where you can buy cold beers and other things cheaply. Enjoy.
