Ngoc Son Temple, Hanoi

#9 of 37 in Historic Sites in Hanoi
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Dedicated to a hero who defeated an army of 300,000 Mongol warriors, Ngoc Son Temple rests on a small jade islet on Hoan Kiem Lake. To get here, you'll cross a red wooden bridge known as the "Flood of Morning Sunlight." Once you pass the two stone gateways and enter the main hall, you can burn incense sticks at the large bronze brazier, and afterwards visit the pavilion and altars dedicated to scholars and deities. The ornate altar dedicated to the hero Tran Hung Dao stands behind the scholars' shrines, along with a room that holds a cast of the lake's giant tortoise.
